This is year 10 for me in administration — 5 more than I spent in the classroom. And no matter how many times I sub, hang out in classrooms, or formally observe, I can’t truly know what it’s like to be a teacher these days — especially post-COVID. Teachers are the experts. I’ve been in the rooms, but I’m still an outsider to the process, no matter how much time I spend there. I have a 10,000-foot view, while they’re living it at the micro level every single day.

As leaders, we have to remember this when providing feedback. Ask questions, talk to the kids, and seek understanding — but don’t act like we know exactly what’s going on or how it should be done. Respect the expertise of teachers and recognize that our role is to support, not dictate, from above.

Listen  to  the  teachers!
